The Impact of Example

In 1 Corinthians Chapter 4, the Lord specifically calls the apostles to be examples or a "spectacle unto the world." When I think about the apostles, past a present, and the lives that they lived in order to be worthy of such a call, the characteristic that comes to mind is faithful. In 1 Corinthians 4:2 is says that it is "required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." This group of men were trusted enough by the Lord because they were faithful stewards throughout their lives.

Being a good example is applicable to all men, for we are all representatives of Christ, even if we have not been ordained as such. Each of us takes the sacrament each week and covenant to take His name upon us. This phrase in the sacrament prayer is reminding us to be good examples, to live like Christ would live.

In the latter chapters of Alma, where Alma is instructing his sons, we learn that actions speak louder than words. It is not enough to know what is right, we must do what is right as well. Alma was trying to cry repentance unto the Zoramites, but because of the bad example of his son Corianton, the people would not believe the words of Alma. Therefore, we must "do good, lest [we] lead away the hearts of many people to destruction" (Alma 39:12).

We receive countless blessings and increased power as we do what we know is right and are cleansed from sin. In 3 Nephi 8:1, we learn that just men, who are cleansed every whit from iniquity are given power to perform miracles in the name of Jesus.

I am so grateful for the powerful examples in my life. They have taught me the importance of keeping the commandments and the blessings that follow. I know the apostles are called of God to be examples to the world, and I know that they have the power of God bestowed upon them to work miracles in this modern day.
